Although Long Island Creek Site 3B shows lower E. Coli levels than other sites that were studied, it is still an impaired stream. The site lies between residential and commercial areas, both are or could potentially cause damage to the stream. Rooftops, concrete, and asphault surround the small patch of vegetation that 3B runs through. Runoff from these areas could pollute the stream and raise baterial levels. Low water flow in the stream means that the pollutants are not being washed away and build up in the area. On the last day of observation there was not enough water in the stream to measure discharge. Because nothing was being washed downstream, a brown substance began forming on the rocks in the pools formed by the once running stream. Another factor that should be taken into account is the trees along the banks. Several of them are in danger of failing and falling on to the roads or the nearby apartment building. One large tree is already dead. The good news is that, unlike other sites that have too much water running through a small space, erosion is not a current problem on this site.
